*

In a bid to tackle hygiene-related challenges facing female students, Ekiti State Polytechnic held a landmark Hygiene Empowerment Program on Monday 30th September, 2024, spearheaded by the Institution’s Gender Unit in collaboration with a Corps member serving in the Institution, Miss Mercy Nwoku. The event, which was declared open by the Polytechnic Rector, Dr Sunday Osinkolu Ajeigbe, aimed to equip female students with practical knowledge on hygiene and well-being. It attracted female staff and students from various departments.

In her keynote address, the Gender Desk Officer of the Polytechnic Dr. G.O Adeleye emphasized the significance of hygiene in women's lives, describing it as an essential aspect of personal empowerment. “Empowerment is about becoming stronger and more confident in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights. Hygiene is a critical, yet often overlooked, component of that empowerment," she noted.

Dr. Adeleye highlighted the importance of a holistic view of hygiene, encompassing not only cleanliness but also menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, mental and emotional well-being. She pointed out that inadequate attention to hygiene, especially menstrual hygiene, has led to missed opportunities for young women across the globe, including Nigeria.

The Hygiene Empowerment Program featured engaging and transformative sessions led by health and hygiene experts on Menstrual Hygiene Management, Nutrition and Diet, Mental and Emotional Well-being and Practical Sessions on Hygiene Products

To further support the students during the programme, hygiene kits were distributed to ensure participants could put their new found knowledge into immediate practice.

The climax of the event was the presentation of modern Blood Pressure kit to the Polytechnic by the Corps member Miss Mercy Nwoku. Receiving the kit, the Rector on the behalf of the Management, commended the initiatives of the Corps member, saying that the Polytechnic community would never forget her good gesture and encouraged others to always give back to their community.

The Hygiene Empowerment Program is expected to become a cornerstone initiative of Ekiti State Polytechnic’s efforts to promote gender equity and student well-being.
