On August 23, 2024, the Ekiti State Polytechnic hosted the launch of the AASHE Sustainability Centre, with a theme centered on leveraging the Triple Helix Model to drive development across Ekiti State. The event, held at the Polytechnic’s 250-seater auditorium, drew 85 participants, including the Polytechnic’s management team, distinguished guests from various academic institutions, industry representatives, and government officials. The event marked a significant milestone for the Polytechnic and the broader community, emphasizing the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the institution's curriculum to promote long-term sustainability.
The event commenced with a formal opening, led by the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Martins Olowoyo. The Rector, Prof. Johnson Kayode Adesodun, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of the event and the Polytechnic's commitment to sustainable development. He announced plans to allocate space for the Sustainability Centre within the new Innovation and Creativity Centre, emphasizing the institution's dedication to fostering an environment conducive to sustainability for future generations.
The launch featured goodwill messages from key stakeholders, including the Polytechnic’s Bursar, Heads of Departments, and other notable guests. These messages underscored the importance of sustainability in various disciplines, from agriculture to engineering, and highlighted ongoing efforts within the institution to integrate sustainability into their respective curricula. The inauguration of the Sustainability Centre was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing the Polytechnic’s leadership in promoting sustainable practices within the academic community.
A panel session followed, featuring prominent figures from academia, industry, and government who discussed sustainable practices and their implications for development. Panelists, including representatives from Afe Babalola University, the Ekiti State House of Assembly, and the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (EKDIPA), shared insights on how their respective organizations were contributing to sustainability. The discussions emphasized the need for collaboration among government, industry, and academia to achieve long-lasting and wide-ranging development.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists on various aspects of sustainability. The Coordinator, Dr. Femi Oyeniyi, delivered closing remarks, expressing gratitude to all participants and highlighting the event as a significant milestone in the Polytechnic's journey towards sustainability. The launch of the AASHE Sustainability Centre was celebrated as a pioneering step in promoting sustainable practices in Nigeria and across Africa, setting a strong foundation for future initiatives in Ekiti State.
